book review of laura clery’s book idiot

In 2021, almost a year into the pandemic, I made a decision to read a book a month. In 2022, I decided to start to make book reviews for each and every book I read as honestly as I could.

Here is that first review.

To kick off my journey of reading a book a month, I started with a book I thought was going to be a quick read. I had this book on my list to buy for a while because of *who* the author was. I’ll be honest, I knew Laura Clery from vine (rip vine) and not much more. I didn’t know what this book had in store for me. Her videos were full of humor and rectangular faces.

I loved her!

On top of that, I thought the title was just *chef’s kiss*

While it did have some humor thrown in there, this book took me by surprise and I was excited to write about it. This book contains a recount of the darkest times in her life that I had no idea existed because of how she presented herself to the public.

I budded a newfound respect for Laura Clery through this book and felt like she told her life story straight up, nothing hidden. I admire that from her as I don’t think I could ever put my whole life out there on display in one big chunk. I never got the feeling of the “I-feel-sorry-for-myself” that I often can’t stand in books like this. While she did take her time to mourn and be sad she always owned up to it and accepted it with open arms, showing that she has since healed. He past just was what it was, nothing more or less.

This is a short book but is not a book for the lighthearted as Laura Clery tells of her struggles with addiction, abusive partners, and more. However, I put a MAJOR trigger warning but still very much recommend.
